Smart sensing integrates advanced physical sensors with real-time computing, connectivity, and artificial intelligence to deliver continuous situational awareness and enable timely, informed responses. Its applications are wide-ranging, from managing natural environments and built infrastructure to strengthening hazard responses (such as bushfires), lifting industrial productivity and creating high-value jobs and advanced manufacturing opportunities in NSW.
Two initiatives of national significance are driving this capability forward:
The NSW Smart Sensing Network (NSSN), established in 2016 with NSW Government support, is jointly led by the University of Sydney and UNSW Sydney. It connects universities across NSW and the ACT to translate world-class research into practical solutions for industry, government, and communities.
The Jericho Smart Sensing Laboratory, launched at the University of Sydney in 2019 by the RAAF, builds on this foundation by accelerating the development of next-generation smart sensing systems and sovereign capability to strengthen Australia’s national security.
In this seminar, Professor Ben Eggleton will explore how smart sensing is already delivering tangible benefits for NSW and Australia, focusing on remote health monitoring and defence situational awareness, and how it can underpin national resilience, security, and long-term economic growth.
